The Russian ambassador is dragged across the coals by our Minister of Foreign Affiars for his country’s alleged sale of weapons to a separatist movement they purportedly support.
Meanwhile thousands of Israeli troops march into Gaza slaughtering the equivalent of several commercial jetliners full of women and children using arms supplied by Australia’s American allies and not one word is said to the Israeli or U.S ambassadors? Is our ‘Woman of Steel’ unable to deal with more than one iniquity at a time or does she and her government feel that Israel and America are justified in killing innocents by saying they are being used as ‘human shields’?
For the life of me I can’t figure out how so few newspapers and broadcast media had so little to say about Gaza even though it was far more important globally than the tragic disaster of MH17. To say I even think this is tantamount to blasphemy in the current mindset of all who have been sucked into this whirlwind of grief whipped up by Rupert and his yellow juggernaught.
I am not an anti-semite because I even consider bringing up the Gaza ‘thing’. When everyone at the local cafe is crying in their lattes over the Russian hegemony and it’s cruel Stalin like regime (sound familiar?) with hardly a thought for the babies torn apart by molten copper in the streets of Gaza. The classic response when something is said about Palestinian women and children dying in large numbers from Isreali shell and rocket fire is, “yes that is very sad, but…”. At this point my blood boils because a seemingly harmless preposition is expressing the tacit absolution of Israel for killing innocents. That is unquestionably the intent of all who follow the word with such statements as, “what about the rockets they fired into Israel?” (yes it is a question but is made as a statement and a justification). The other one is, “well what do you expect when they are human shields?” What the fuck is a human sheild to begin with? A wall of human flesh against firebreathing dragons in the guise of Merkava 4 tanks? (Which are incidentally modelled on the US Abrams and use many parts and munitions supplied by American companies such as Catepillar, Dupont Industries and the UK supply the Royal Ordnance M68 tank guns the M4 uses as well).
Back to the human sheild – women and children appear to be considered by the average thinking Australian as valid targets if they are anywhere near someone classified as a ‘terrorist’. Oddly it appears that these terrorists haven’t figured out by now that standing amongst women and children seems to offer little protection from Israeli aggression. So they do it anyway because all of them are heartless, childless, motherless mongrels who don’t care if these women and kids are blown to pieces. My question that always follows the ‘but’ is this; “if an Australian used women and children as a human sheild would our police or military fire on them anyway?” Surely you would hope not? What kind of arsehole would agree to such an action? I have young ones and loved ones I hold very dear and if they were considered as human sheilds I would be thinking please don’t kill them just to get this guy! Cripes we even call off a police chase if the offenders drive too fast in case they might injure an innocent bystander, so imagine the public furore if we fired a tank shell into a block of apartments filled with ‘modern families’ eating meat and three veg while watching MKR because a ‘terrorist’ had fired a rocket from their roof?
The prospect of such cruelty is not the way good old Australians are supposed to think? Or are we? You have to wonder when the average Joe makes throw away statements about the lives of defenseless people. I am not referring to the soldiers on either side. Soldiers have a choice to fight even if they are conscripted they can still say, “NO! I won’t do that!” Using such excuses as, “I was only following orders”, did not absolve the Nazis at Nuremberg and nor should it absolve the IDF in Gaza or Hamas either for that matter. The simple solution is that every man and woman ought to have a concientious objection to such actions and even under threat of punishment should not commit a crime of this magnitude for any reason, any nation, any god! If our moral compass’ go awry when it comes to the slaughter of bystanders there is simply no excuse, no ‘but’, that can justify such horror. The same Australians who sit and talk in their livingrooms and pubs and cafes must surely see that they are as responsible for the deaths as the guy who pulls the trigger or presses the button if they condone it and don’t speak against it.
Can we be blamed for believing only what we read and watch on TV? Fuck yes!!! All the greatest civil rights leaders like Ghandi, King, Mandela et al used the boycott to great effect, destroying empire’s grip on their oppressed people simply by not working for those empires, not contributing to the propaganda by going along with it – believing it. Don’t watch the news, don’t read the mainstream papers, read books and search for the truth online (although sadly even that supposed ‘free’ information platform is polluted by conspiracy theories which muddy the truth and create a real lunatic fringe whose maddening gabble serves only to distract the people of the world from the growing world government controlled by the pinnacle corporations that run everything). But we digress (again), the essence of these observations in our own little microcosm of Australia and the cafe culture that is the first world’s global meeting place appears to suggest that the mainstream zeitgeist is that we are willing to look the other way when children are killed by military action that is touted as rooting out terrorists (premeditated in the case of Israel’s actions in Gaza) but are very much against the accidental shooting down of commercial aircraft (which without doubt was an accident in the case of MH17 – although it’s possible it wasn’t and we won’t find out the motives for such an action till many years from now – a conspiracy to distract?).
We don’t want to seem irreverent regarding MH17, it is a terrible tragedy and many Australians died and deserve remembrance and respect. We simply feel it is equally important to support the innocents in Gaza (anywhere in the world for that matter). And every Australian, every compassionate person anywhere should. No territorial claim or propaganda to the contrary ought convince any of us that blowing buildings apart with families still inside is justified or that indiscrimate slaughter can be dismissed as ‘collateral damage’.
What good does projecting guilt do, if you have been arguing this way. So many millions of people have been manipulated by powerful propaganda in the past, really intelligent people too and it’s no good implying they were stupid to explain the acceptance of such cruelty visited upon their own people, because they truly believed they were right and why wouldn’t you if the only conduit to any information was supplied to you by the very people you voted for and trust.
The hypocrisy surrounding who supplied the weapons to the Russian Separatists is worth looking at more closely. Why is it that America and it’s allies (that’s us folks) seem to think that supplying weapons to who they want is any less evil than Russia supplying their weapons to who they want? The data that demonstrates who is buying and selling the most weapons is very telling.
The USA between 1992 and 2010 imported $995,769,657 and exported $606,577,243 of small arms and ammunition both military and civilian (we won’t even mention the bigger stuff). Russia during the same period imported $1,930,407 and exported 92,669,695, these figures can be found at http://workshop.chromeexperiments.com/ projects/armsglobe/ they demonstrate very eloquently which ‘pot is calling which kettle’ black!
This hypocrisy lays at the heart of every western ‘democratic’ nation’s political mindset, the concept that we are right and ‘they’, who ever they are, are wrong – the mediaplex tells us who they are, very conveniently, to suit any given current agenda. These enemies change with reckless abandon, one year Saddam Hussien is a friend of the USA and later he is an enemy, at one time Nelson Mandela was considered a terrorist by the Reagan administration, a few years later he became a hero.
What is astounding is that in the face of insurmountable evidence to the contrary we still believe the bullshit they are feeding us via FOX News and the daily papers owned worldwide by people who are major shareholders in both the media and the armaments industries. We see headlines that tell us the USA has resupplied Israel with ammunition alongside stories of women and children killed by those same munitions.
How can this be considered right by any person with even a small conscience? Surely we all have to find a common ground that doesn’t see us killing each other’s children? That wonderful song by Sting comes to mind when I hear the human sheild argument presented as validation by the mediaplex or even when propagandist cartoons and commentators charge Hamas with actually using children to win a PR war and make us hate Israel. “I hope the Russian’s love their children too”.
This article is not an exercise in bashing Israel, it is more about the middle class world view that sees nothing wrong in any regime’s agenda when it comes to the ‘accidental’ slaughter of women and children for any reason. Therefore as we have been slowly but surely educated into thinking of people as collateral damage we become immune to their suffering and like the frog that is slowly boiled we are proselytized into supporters of any terrible action to achieve the ends we want, more importantly what the media wants us to want.
And the media is and has been for sometime controlled by a very small group of people globally. Everyday you here people offering very strong opinions which are based on what they read everyday or what they see when they turn on the TV – these messages are all controlled, the content is manipulated by that same elite group whose interests (very complex interests it seems) are being protected or projected to suit their corporate agendas.
The great modern day philosopher Noam Chomsky has spoken about this at length for many years and is well worth more investigation. We viewed a youtube titled ‘The Myth of the Liberal Media: The Propaganda Model of News’ (https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YDiJA2_oZY) in which the simple facts are demonstrated in a straight forward way that leaves little doubt the media is not free and not liberal but is controlled by the people who own it and the poeple who advertise in it.
Essentially we are presented only with what these people believe in or what these people have vested interests in. The selling of products can have a profound effect on what we see and hear. The Sydney Morning Herald recently had advertisers saying they would pull advertising from the paper for publishing what they considered a ‘bad’ cartoon and a columnist was sacked, thus demonstably the advertisers control the editorial!
The umbrella body of the Jewish community in Sydney, Australia, threatened to take action against a major newspaper for publishing a cartoon about Gaza that “racially vilifies” Jews.
Yair Miller, president of the New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies, wrote to the editor of the Sydney Morning Herald claiming that the cartoon by Glen Le Lievre in the July 26 edition was in breach of the Anti-Discrimination Act.
“In our view this is racial vilification, not only in the sense of offending, insulting, humiliating and intimidating Jews as a group, but also in the sense of inciting third parties to hatred of Jews,” Miller wrote.
Everybody I speak to is torn by the historical symphathy for the Jews and confused by the irony of Gaza as a ‘concentration camp’, although it is portrayed as a ‘Palestinian settlement’ it is surrounded by Israeli ‘disputed’ territory with a high concrete wall and restricted access to the outside world (and the outside world to it).
Damn it there we go seemingly attacking Israel again, and we don’t want to because we have many Jewish friends many of whom must be thinking, “hang on, maybe there is some truth in this?”. All we want is for people to be objective and realise that we are being manipulated to squeeze as much profit from us all as is achievable without creating revolution.
History is being written to a script provided not by the intelligentsia but by the plutocracy that rules our modern world, make no mistake we aren’t ruled by the government that is elected we are guided to who should be elected by propaganda provided by the media at any given time. There are many examples where this has happened throughout history, most notably Nazi Germany in which a nation that produced such enlightened people as Albert Einstien was convince by the media to round up and kill millions of people. The evidence that huge numbers of people can be manipulated globally into believing whatever this ‘mediaplex’ needs us to believe is stupendous and ought not be dismissed as conspiracy theory.
John Swinton, the former chief of staff of the New York Times, from his speech at the New York Press Club 2013.”
“There is no such thing, at this date of the world’s history, in America, (Australia included, Ed.) as an independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty four hours my occupation would be gone. The business of the Journalist is to destroy truth; To lie outright; To pervert; To vilify; To fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it and what folly is this toasting an independent press? We are the tools and vassals for rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes.”
